Extra low voltage (ELV) is a common term for low-voltage power distribution systems with voltages between 120 and 240 volts. ELV systems are used to minimize the amount of power drawn from high-voltage lines and reduce the risk of electrical fires, since lower-voltages permit longer wiring runs without the need for extensive overcurrent protection devices.
Why would you want an Extra Low Voltage system?
There are several reasons why an ELV system could make sense. One option is if you have an older home with higher lengths of wiring running to remote rooms, which can be more difficult to replace. Another reason might be that your home has very long wiring runs because you have added on or expanded your house, or installed a larger or more complex system, such as a pool pump.
